In February 2020, the landmark Marmot Review 10 years on drew attention to stalling progress on health outcomes and widening health inequalities in England. Clearly much has changed since then.

To address this, the Health Foundation has commissioned the UCL Institute of Health Equity to produce the report: COVID-19 and health inequalities.

This is part of the Health
Foundation’s COVID-19 impact inquiry, investigating the
long-term health and health inequalities effects of the pandemic in the UK.

To launch this report, the Health Foundation and Institute for Health Equity (IHE) invite you to join them for a jointly hosted webinar from 09.00 – 10.30 on Tuesday 15 December 2020.

09.00 – 09.45
Hosted by UCL Institute of Health Equity

This section will use key findings from the report to highlight the impact of the pandemic on health inequalities. A panel discussion will cover key themes including education, employment, income and poverty, ethnicity, regional differences in England and building back fairer.

Speakers include:

  • Andy Burnham (TBC), Mayor of Greater Manchester
  • Angela Donkin, Chief Social Scientist, National Foundation for Educational Research
  • Kevin Fenton, London Regional Director, Public Health England
  • Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director, Institute of Health Equity
  • Chair: Richard Horton, Editor, The Lancet

09.45 – 10.30
Hosted by the Health Foundation

Through the lens of the COVID-19 impact inquiry, this section will look ahead to what needs to be done in the future and how to address the issues that we’ve raised, including how we can learn from different experiences of pandemic to protect the nation’s health and wellbeing in the long-term.

Speakers include:

  • James Banks, Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Fiscal Studies
  • Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director, Institute of Health Equity
  • Mehrunisha Suleman (TBC), Senior Research Fellow, the Health Foundation
