Suggested text for inclusion in funding bids – for academics
We have developed the following suggested text for academics to include in grant submissions if they wish to include information about Bristol Health Partners AHSC:
Bristol Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) brings together the city region’s universities, major health and care providers and commissioners, covering the 1.1M population in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) area. One of only 8 AHSCs in England, designated by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), NHS England and NHS Improvement, this internationally recognised designation acknowledges and unites our region’s excellence in healthcare provision, research and innovation, education and training to deliver healthier lives, through improved prevention of illness and disease and better integration of health and care services. The AHSC provides local researchers with effective and enduring networks through Health Integration Teams (comprising health professionals, researchers, commissioners, voluntary organisations & service users) which are focused on co-designing research projects and implementing findings to optimally deliver prevention and delivery of evidence-informed care. The AHSC also connects our region’s National Institute for Health Research infrastructure to support co-ordinated working on our area’s research priorities.

General
- Our AHSC aggregated Research Capability Funding (RCF, a measure of total NIHR grant income) in 2018/19 was the fourth highest across all AHSCs in England and is consistent with our current total awarded NIHR grants of >£135M;
- University of Bristol is the only institution to be a member of all three NIHR Research Schools (Primary Care, Public Health and Social Care) and is one of the top 8 MRC-funded UK universities;
- In REF 2014, 50% of University of BristolPublic Health, Health Services and Primary Care research rated 4* and 86% as 3 or 4*. 100% of research impact and the research environment rated 4*;
- 15 NIHR Senior Investigators, 15 Wellcome Trust Investigators and 21 FMedSci.
Primary care
- 97% of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) GP practices rated Outstanding or Good by CQC;
- BNSSG has for the last 6 years the highest RCF allocation of any English Clinical Commissioning Group.
Public health
- Shanghai GRAS Ranking for UoB Public Health (2019): 2nd in the UK, 3rd in Europe and 8th globally;
- University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust is one of only 3 acute trusts in England to achieve successive CQC Outstanding rating (2017 and 2019). North Bristol NHS Trust is rated as Good with Outstanding for care (2019);
- University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust scored the highest of all acute trusts for overall hospital experience in the national inpatient survey (2018);
Secondary care
- University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust is one of only 3 acute trusts in England to achieve successive CQC Outstanding rating (2017 and 2019). North Bristol Trust is rated as Good with Outstanding for care (2019);
- University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust scored the highest of all acute trusts for overall hospital experience in the national inpatient survey (2018)
