The One in a Million study has created a hugely valuable video archive of 300 GP consultations which can be reused for a variety of purposes. Come along to our launch event to find out more. See the draft programme.

Around one million GP consultations happen in England alone every working day, addressing multiple and often complex problems. Despite this, studies of what goes on during these encounters are uncommon.

The One in a Million study was funded by NIHR School of Primary Care Research to create a database of video-recorded consultations plus linked data that could be shared for future research and teaching purposes. Data have been collected from 12 practices across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset, representing high and low levels of deprivation.

Between July 2014-April 2015, 327 patient consultations with 23 different GPs were successfully recorded. All individuals who gave their consent to participate in the study were asked whether they would be prepared to allow other researchers to access their data, subject to further ethical approval and 89.8 per cent (n=300) consented. From March 2016, bona fide researchers will be able to apply to request access to the dataset via the University of Bristol Research Data Repository.

At this official launch event we welcome potential users and those with an interest in consultations research and/or teaching. The One in a Million team will be showcasing the data Archive, how to access it and how it can be used; and will be joined by Dr Terry Kemple, a practising GP and GP educationalist in Bristol and President of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and Elizabeth Stokoe, Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University who will be talking about her pioneering approach to communication skills training for which she has won a WIRED Fellowship.
