For over a decade, The Reader has been improving health and changing lives through reading. Their work decreases stress, improves mental health, creates vital human connections and supports people to live well. It also provides a platform for professional development and job enrichment. They have brought their Shared Reading approach to many settings, from hospitals and recovery centres to libraries and care homes – and those who read and train with them report improved confidence, greater job satisfaction and deeper connections to the communities they serve.

The Reader brings people together in weekly groups to listen to poems and stories read aloud, reflecting on what they read and sharing their thoughts and responses. They have a growing body of research showing key health benefits to those who read with them.

“You may think that The Reader is all about reading, but it is really all about health”

– Dr Jack Czauderna, Chair, Pioneer Health Foundation

This will also be an opportunity to try Shared Reading first hand, hear directly from The Reader founder Dr Jane Davis MBE, alongside beneficiaries and find out how your organisation can get involved in a Better Bristol through Shared Reading.
