BIG HIT Director coordinates University of Bristol efforts to fight COVID-19

Experts at the University of Bristol have come together to help in the fight against COVID-19.

Bristol UNCOVER is the COVID Emergency Research group based at the university and is made up of around 30 senior academics and their teams.

One of the group’s co-ordinators is Adam Finn, who is also one of the directors of our Bristol Immunisation Group Health Integration Team.

Adam said in a piece in The Bristol Cable: “NHS labs are working at capacity. It’s quite useful if another lab can do research-related tests, so that’s what we’re doing.”

His team plans to use a biochemical process called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to check that easier-to-use test methods are effective enough to be used more widely. They are also working on measuring antibodies to see if people have already been infected by the virus.

Initial funding has come through from The Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research.
