Common Ambition Bristol is looking for volunteers

  • 3rd March 2022

Common Ambition Bristol, supported by our Sexual Health Inprovement HIT, is a community powered project for African and Caribbean heritage communities in Bristol. It aims to encourage people to test for HIV and be in control of their sexual health. In order to do this, Common Ambition Bristol is organising events in the community to raise the knowledge and understanding of HIV so the fear and stigma that often surrounds it is decreased.

Bristol is a city with higher rates of HIV than other cities in the UK, which includes people who may not be aware of their HIV status as they aren’t testing. A misunderstanding of what HIV is, along with fear and stigma, are often reasons why people don’t get tested. Common Ambition Bristol exists to change these misunderstanding as well as to address the overall health inequalities that African and Caribbean heritage communities face.

Common Ambition Bristol is looking for volunteers to help us do this by joining the project as a CAB Community Crew Member in at least one (or more) of the following roles:

  • Event Support: attending community events & being part of a stall/welcoming and chatting to people to promote the project
  • Community Speakers: attending specific community events to represent the project and talk about sexual health in a public space
  • Outreach Champion: proactively championing the project in the community, speaking to peers about sexual health and the support/services available

You don’t need to have detailed knowledge of HIV or have experience in a similar role. You just need to be an enthusiastic people who wants to make a difference. Given the nature of the project, we are looking for people who are either from within the African or Caribbean heritage communities, or people who have strong links and affiliations with these communities.

You will be provided with:

  • Full training (which you must be available to attend on Friday 25 March and Saturday 26 March)
  • Ongoing support
  • Expenses
  • An opportunity to be involved in a ground breaking project

If you would like to be part of this exciting project, please read through the role description and fill in the online application form by Friday 18 March 2022. Alternatively you can download the application form and email it to Aisha Namurach at i[email protected]
