North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) has launched a magazine, ‘Take Park, Be Involved in Research’, to encourage and inspire patients and members of the public to get involved in health research. It tells the personal stories of people who’ve been involved in research at Southmead Hospital.

NBT’s Sharon Nolan, Research Communications Officer and editor of the magazine explained the thinking behind it:

“I wanted to bring research to life by telling personal stories of people who have actually taken part in research at North Bristol NHS Trust. I created the Take Part Be Involved magazine to share with you some experiences of the people who I have had the privilege to meet, who have all taken part in research at Southmead hospital. Some of these people are living with an incurable disease and are still unsure if the research they are taking part in will ultimately extend their life. Each person still wanted to share their thoughts with you and to share what it was like to take part in a research study within a hospital environment.”

The first edition includes:

  • Myeloma cancer research: Emma’s story
  • Dementia research: Chris and Marlene’s story
  • Protecting the kidney during a transplant: Carol and Barrie’s story
  • Prostate cancer research: Mr Bennett’s story
  • Watch & Wait cancer trial: Craig’s story
  • How you can support research through the Southmead Hospital Charity fund
