The Reframe project, a collaboration between our partners UWE Bristol and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, alongside NHS England, has been shortlisted for two national awards at the 2025 Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards.
Reframe was developed to address the shortage of medical photography representing conditions on darker skin tones. The project launched a free, inclusive photo library designed to help clinicians, educators, students and the public improve diagnosis accuracy and health outcomes through better representation.
Over 3,000 images feature in the library, captured from over 150 volunteers who attended photoshoots at community venues in Bristol to have their medical conditions (including rashes, scars and jaundice) professionally photographed.
These volunteers included members of our diverse Research Engagement Network, who were inspired to get involved themselves and spread the word after welcoming the Reframe project leads to one of their Network meetings.
Reframe has been shortlisted for the following HSJ Awards categories:
Innovation and Improvement in Reducing Healthcare Inequalities Award
NHS Race Equality Award
The HSJ Awards celebrate outstanding innovation and excellence across the NHS and wider healthcare sector. Winners will be revealed at the ceremony on 20 November (2025) in London.
