Overcoming barriers to walking in Bristol: underground through subways, overground on busy roads or quiet side streets, and wandering free…

A free event with Bristol Health Partners and Bristol Walking Alliance.

During Bristol WalkFest 2023, three speakers consider some of the barriers to walking and how they can be addressed. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Programme

7.00pm Welcome and introductions

7.10pm Suzanne Audrey, Bristol Walking Alliance (BWA), considers some of the problems with Bristol’s pedestrian subways. Is it realistic for BWA to ask for a citywide programme to replace existing underpasses with street level crossings?

7.30pm Tamara Bozovic, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) is researching how the walking environment affects walking experiences. Her latest research will compare walking from A to B by two different routes: a direct, busy route and a more tranquil, greener route.

7.50pm Sophie Brown, founder of Bristol Steppin’ Sistas, describes how the group helps women of colour overcome barriers to walking in places they would not have ventured to including rural areas around Bristol and further afield.
