Building regional shared vision for Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV

As new integrated sexual health services embed across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, informed by evidence of population health needs, our Sexual Health Improvement (SHIP) HIT is bringing together local expertise to set a clear strategic direction for sexual and reproductive health and HIV.

More than 80 people involved in sexual health across the region joined SHIP for a Sexual and Reproductive Health & HIV Strategy Development Workshop on 13 November at M Shed.

Delegates included healthcare professionals, educators, researchers, youth workers, community leaders, commissioners, providers, and people with lived experience.

The day was a mix of facilitated discussions, data and insight presentations, collaborative visioning and strategy sessions, as well as opportunities to network and build partnerships.

Attendees commented that they particularly enjoyed taking part in a rich discussion with panellists – including a trans male, a care-experienced young person and an older person living with HIV – who had diverse lived experiences of, and perspectives on sexual health.

Rachel Allbless, Bristol Health Partners’ Joint Chief Operating Officer, said:

“It’s challenging for people to share their sexual health experiences in any forum, so for our panellists to be so upfront and honest in a room full of people was wonderful. It showed that they trusted us, the space, and those alongside them.

“Overall, the workshop showed how all the agencies across our region are really keen to collaborate. Working together to improve people’s sexual and reproductive health is something that’s not often prioritised, but if it’s done effectively and supported by research and evidence, it will improve lives.”
