Trauma-informed training for those working in health and care research

  • 16th June 2025

Thanks to support from Bristol Health Partners, a new training programme is helping people in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) learn how to work in a trauma-informed way when doing health and care research.

The training is for anyone involved in local research who may work with people affected by trauma. It helps participants understand how trauma can impact mental health and wellbeing, and suggests ways to respond during research engagement and practice that support recovery and avoid causing more harm.

The Adversity & Trauma Health Integration Team commissioned an initial training programme using funding from NHS Charities Together. The training was developed and delivered by Second Step and was evaluated as positive.

Now that trauma-informed practice is part of the regional Integrated Care System’s programme of work, the training has been adopted to run four times a year until March 2027. It is funded by the Self-harm Matters HIT, NIHR ARC West and the BNSSG Integrated Care Board. It is co-led by Second Step and people with lived experience of trauma, to ensure research supported in BNSSG is trauma informed, and promotes trust, compassion and equity.

The first in-person training day for 2025 took place in April, with 15 people attending and giving positive feedback. One participant said:

“… really helpful content. Sharing of real examples with attendees and public contributors, I now know and appreciate what needs to be in place.”

The next sessions in July, September and October 2025 are already fully booked. If you are interested in joining a session in early 2026, please email Bristol Health Partners Senior Project Manager, Karen Llewellyn: [email protected].
